A derelict building on the outskirts of the city is one step closer to being given a new lease of life.

Plans have been lodged by Sprowston Town Council to turn the former Viking pub and Royal Bengal restaurant, in Tills Road, into a community venue.

It comes after the council said in June that a planning application for the Viking Centre was due "imminently".

Now details of the proposed overhaul have been revealed for the 15,000sqft building, after being registered with Broadland District Council.

The town council are seeking to convert and extend the building to form a new multi-purpose facility for use by the local community.

It will comprise a large, multi-function hall with separate storage, toilets and a kitchen.

The extension will create an additional 1,991sqft of new floor space.

The town council, which bought the building in May 2021, also says the existing building will be fully refurbished internally including the removal of all existing redundant plants and equipment.

On the ground floor, two self-contained function rooms will be formed, each containing storage, toilets and tea-making facilities.

In addition to the function rooms, a cafe bar will be created in the central area of the building, which will also be self-contained, having its own toilet facilities and services along with a stock room within the cellar.

The first-floor layout will be converted into three small office units with toilet and tea-making facilities.

The proposals aim to provide bespoke community facilities, tailored to the needs of local residents and community leaders.

The existing car park will be resurfaced and re-lined to accommodate 16 car parking spaces and two accessible access spaces for both staff and visitors.

In addition, six wall-mounted electric car charging points will be provided.

The Viking pub was built in 1956 and opened the following year.

It closed in 2007 before a bid was lodged to turn the site into the Royal Bengal Indian restaurant in 2010.

Purchased by Sazu Miah, the restaurant was closed down in mid-2019.

The town council is expected to let out rooms after the revamp, with Sprowston Youth Engagement Project among the groups interested in making use of the venue.
