Indian police have launched an investigation after a former city pub landlord died on a building site in the foothills of the Himalayas.

Former Murderers landlord Ivan Brown died aged 71 after reportedly coming into contact with a live wire on a building site while taking photos at Baikunth Nagar on Sunday.

Now police in the district of Himachal Pradesh are looking into why the wire was live.

The Times of India reported that two labourers had a close shave at the spot a few months ago when they were warned by a worker at the site to move away.

Mr Brown was visiting the country with a friend named David Linder on a one-year tourist visa at the time of the incident, having arrived in the area on Friday.

The Foreign Office says it is in contact with the local authorities adding that it is "supporting the family".

Following his death, close friend Roger Cawdron, who is landlord at the Ribs of Beef in Magdalen Street described him as "a dear friend".

Mr Cawdron said: "He was certainly a character.

"He will be very sadly missed by all of his friends and family, myself included."
