Ben Godfrey is hoping that the sell-on clause York City received following his transfer from Norwich City to Everton will be enough to help his boyhood club survive.
The 22-year-old joined the Toffees in a £25million move from Carrow Road in the recent transfer window, although the Minstermen are believed to have benefited from a 10% sell on fee of City’s club record sale.
Godfrey is pleased some of the fee will be given to the club that helped develop him prior to his move to Norfolk in January 2016.
“The fees in terms of transfers and sell-on clauses, that’s all agreed by Norwich and York,” Godfrey told the York Press. “People ask me about it, but it never gets brought up with me because it’s irrelevant to me.
“But, when I heard about it, being from York, supporting York as a kid and playing for them, it is massive. I’m hoping that the information (that I heard) was correct.”
Numerous clubs in the lower divisions are struggling to survive due to the inability to open their turnstiles and let fans back into stadiums. Godfrey is hoping the cash can help York not just survive, but also plot a return back to the Football League.
“And it couldn’t have come at a better time really, during this tough situation where a lot of clubs are struggling financially.
“I really do hope that it benefits York and (helps) maintain the club’s status because, as scary as it is, clubs are actually disappearing.
“Hopefully this bad situation passes by and they can not only survive with that money but develop a really strong squad and go back to competing at the level that they should be, which is the Football League.”
