More than 200 people turned up to view proposals for a new woodland housing estate on the edge of Norwich.

Socially Conscious Capital (SCC) is seeking to build 300 homes within Racecourse Plantations in Thorpe St Andrew.

And over the weekend, members of the public were invited to view what was being proposed as part of the scheme.

Dominic Lawson, planning consultant, said about 66pc of people who visited the exhibition on Friday and Saturday 'supported' the plans.

But there has also been opposition from the Friends of Thorpe Woodlands and Norfolk Wildlife Trust, who are concerned about the loss of trees.

As well as the new homes, developers are seeking to create a 150-acre woodland park, which would be given to community ownership.

It would also improve a footpath running along Plumstead Road, known as 'The Trod'.

But the latest traffic studies suggest the development will generate 173 vehicle movements between 8am and 9am each day, and 176 between 5pm and 6pm.

Katherine Dack, 31, from Thorpe St Andrew, came to view the plans on Saturday. She said: 'The only thing I am dubious of is the extra traffic, but I think the proposals to make the woodland more accessible is a good idea.'

But Peter Frosdick, 46, from Silver Street, Norwich, added: 'I think there are lots of fields where you can build houses on, so why do they need to cut trees down?'

SCC said it would be submitting a planning application to Broadland District Council in early autumn.
