Confusion over a car ban in a city street may soon come to an end after a county councillor has promised action on the issue.

On November 5 Norwich woman Lucy Hall, 66, acted as a "human bollard" in Exchange Street to protest drivers flouting pedestrianisation rules before being removed by police.

Norwich Evening News:

Bosses in Exchange Street, who frequently watch drivers using the road, have said action must be taken.

Bobby Nour, 58, who has had his leather shop L'Darado in Exchange Street for nine years, said: "The street is definitely better without traffic.

Norwich Evening News:

"It says clearly not to come down this way but everyone seems to ignore it.

"The best option would be putting clearer signs further up the road before you get to Exchange Street - once you've made it down here, where are they going to go?

"By then it's too late.

"Most ignore any signs and go straight through."

He added that he would welcome the street being resurfaced, like Gentlemans Walk, so it is clearer to vehicles that it has been pedestrianised.

Green county councillor Paul Neale, who represents the Nelson ward, visited Exchange Street to look at the issue between pedestrians and vehicles.

Norwich Evening News:

He said: "I spoke with police officers and they then kindly spent time marshalling vehicles.

"I have spoken with a senior highways officer at County Hall who has reacted quickly.

"Temporary new signs should be here in days and then an array of new signs and measures will follow later."

He also claimed there will soon be marshals funded by the county council to monitor the situation.

He added he believes the city council is also currently bidding for government funding to change the road surface in the area so it is similar to Gentlemans Walk.

"This is a step in the right direction," he said. "Officers have taken a proactive approach."

Director of Thorns DIY, Miriam Devlin, added: "The signage isn't that clear at the moment.

Norwich Evening News:

"The problem is city centre restrictions change on almost a monthly basis."

However, she stated that any work that would change the physical road layout could have a detrimental impact on business.

She added: "I feel they should let cars come down Exchange Street so they can get to St Andrews."
