With the festive season fast approaching, many will be heading to the city for a spot of Christmas shopping and a bite to eat along the way. 

And luckily Norwich is spoilt for choice when it comes to cafes - from cosy coffee spots to indulgent lunches. 

But if you’re struggling to make up your mind, some of the city’s best cafes have been named in the Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Awards for 2022.    

Based on reviews and opinions from customers, these businesses have been highly rated on Tripadvisor for their service, quality, customer satisfaction, and more. 

Here are the top seven independent places to visit that have been included in the review site's guide. 

1. The Street Cafe

If you beat the crowds by heading to Norwich first thing, why not set yourself up with a full English?

This traditional cafe in Magdalen Street has had a "great reputation for its fry-ups since 1996" and some say the best in Norwich.

One reviewer on Tripadvisor said: "Fantastic breakfast.

"I have been coming for years and highly recommend it.

"Great service, great food and selection offered - what more could you want?"

2. Cafe No 33

Cafe 33 is arguably one of Norwich's most popular cafes, with city-goers regularly queueing to get a table. 

The family-run business has become renowned for its selection of homemade cakes and "hearty" brunches.

One person who gave the cafe a five-star review on Tripadvisor said: "The best breakfast/brunch available in Norwich.

"Such a great choice and variety with a whole separate vegan menu. Big portions and great value for money.

"Worth waiting in the queue that is usually outside."

3. Cafe Gelato

If you're looking for something sweet, Cafe Gelato offers a vast range of tasty ice creams -whatever the weather.

They have even been known to make a mince pie flavour and include other festive toppings in previous years.

One Tripadvisor reviewer wrote online: "Been coming here for many years and it has never disappointed me.

"The service is always an absolute 10/10, as is the gelato.

"Absolutely worth a trip."

4. Marmalades

Nestled within Norwich's Royal Arcade, Marmalades has been serving the city since 1999.

The café offers a relaxing setting to enjoy a selection of quality filter and espresso-based coffees, teas, hot chocolates and milkshakes.

One Tripadvisor reviewer described the business as a  "fabulous place to eat" and wrote online: "The best place for lunch, vibrant venue with delicious food and first class service with a smile.

"A master class in customer service efficiency. Looking forward to our next visit."

5. Sahara café​ and Patisserie

Where:67-69 Magdalen Street, Norwich, NR3 1AA

"Bringing the flavours of north Africa to the streets of Norwich", Saraha has two locations in Magdalen Street and St Benedicts Street.

Some of their menu items in shakshouka, tagine and a harissa chicken ciabatta.

A Tripadvisor reviewer, who gave the business five-stars described it as a "great chilled out spot for a drink".

They wrote: "I have popped in a few times and it never disappoints.

"Great coffee, great mint tea and very tasty wraps to keep you going. Love the relaxed, friendly atmosphere.

"A gem that is worth a visit if in the area."

6. Logans

Sometimes you can't beat a good sarnie and Logans is one of the oldest sandwich shops in the heart of Norwich Lanes.

From a jacket potato, sandwich, baguette, panini, tortilla wrap or a build-your-own salad box there is plenty to choose from.

One Tripadvisor reviewer said "Don’t walk by, this is a real gem.

"Great freshly prepared food at a really competitive price.

"Delicious. I heartily recommend it."

7. Tofurei

Feeding Norwich's vegan community, the team at Tofurei claim to be "soya alchemists" who "transform the humble bean into wondrous things".

One Tripadvisor review said it is "the best vegan lunch food" in the city.

They wrote: "The food is always delicious. My personal favourite is the chick'n, bac'n and sweetcorn sandwich and the chocolate fudge cake.

"Sometimes we sit in, and the atmosphere is warm and the surroundings are tastefully decorated with lots of plants."
