City F1 fans are being asked to start their engines as a new Scalextric club opens at a city centre library.

Plumstead Road Library will welcome slot cars and drivers of all shapes and sizes as the lights go green on its first-ever Scalextric club.

The fun began with the first of three taster sessions on Saturday, December 3, with racing fans young and old packing into the library to compete.

Norwich Evening News:

It comes as a group aiming to preserve the library's future attempts to get different groups of people who would not usually visit through its doors.

Anne Parsons, 78, chairwoman of Friends of Plumstead Library said the club was attracting a wide demographic of people.

Norwich Evening News:

She said: "The library used to run a similar club and it was very popular among older men.

"But now we want to make something fun for everyone, especially those who don't use the library.

Norwich Evening News:

"It all started when we found out our children's entertainer Jake Ace's dad had this huge scale track, so we asked if he would bring it to the library and he agreed.

"It's a scale replica of a grand prix track.

"So far it's been particularly popular among dads and lads, which is great as boys are especially hesitant to read."

Ms Parsons added the experience is "better than in your living room" as cars do not come off the track at every turn.

Norwich Evening News:

The library will hold two more free taster sessions before it hopes to launch a racing championship while keeping costs for participants to a minimum.

Ms Parsons added: "All the cars are there and it's a big area for racing we want to be very inclusive.

Norwich Evening News:

"We'd like to form a championship, maybe we'll find the next Lewis Hamilton, but we're also aware some people don't have skill and we still want to appeal to them."

Free coffee will be on offer during the sessions with everything needed to race provided.

The next two free taster sessions will take place on Saturday, December 17, and Saturday, January 7.
