Enjoy live music, nibbles and "loads of Irish craic" at a city pub's first birthday bash this weekend.

The owner of Pogue Mahon's in Prince of Wales Road is toasting to his first successful year in business.

And Aidan Mahon is hoping his customers will join him in his celebrations with a good old knees up at the venue on Sunday, December 11.

From 5pm there will be music from Dirty Havana, Barny Holmes, Emily and half of Sons of Mark.

There will also be canapes and giveaways, with the chance to grab a Guinness t-shirt.

Mr Mahon said: "It was always a risk opening a bar post covid.

"But I always felt that Norwich needed a good, traditional Irish pub.

"We didn't hit our first-year target but we got quite close.

"I'm really proud and we have a really good reputation already, as a lovely, safe pub on Prince of Wales Road - which also caters for an older crowd." 

But the celebration will also recognise the hard work of his staff and the challenges the business has overcome amid the cost of living crisis. 

Mr Mahon, 52, said: "It has been a hard year.

"We have had four beer increases in that time. 

"But the bar has still been very successful."

The pub has become a hub for live music, supporting local bands and artists.

Back in April the venue also expanded with the opening of a secret cabaret club with a speakeasy feel - named Poitín - below the pub which has been a "big hit".

Poitín has been closed to the public while it is being used for private functions and parties during the Christmas period but it will reopen in January. 

As well as the live music and "great craic", the pub's roast dinners have also been selling out every Sunday.

Next year, Mr Mahon said they are hoping to put more of a focus on their food offering. 

He added: "I want to thank everybody who has been part of Pogue from staff to customers.

"They have been integral in making the pub what it is.

"We have gone from being a new pub to a very well-established pub in a year which is fantastic."
