A plot of private land has been vandalised by mindless yobs leaving a family to pick up the pieces and possibly leaving altogether.

Bluebell Allotments South, in The Avenues near George Borrow Road, was the target of vandals on the evening of February 15, who littered flower beds with vape sticks and destroyed greenhouses, scattering shards of glass everywhere.

Katie Mullarkey lives off Dereham Road with her husband and two daughters, seven-year-old Tallulah and 12-year-old Nancy, and have owned an allotment since 2020.

Mrs Mullarkey, 44, said: "We've had vodka bottles smashed all over our plot and in our raised flower beds, as well as vaping sticks thrown in.

"We used to have a swing for the kids and some seating which we've recently had to remove because the swing was destoryed and the picnic table was vandalised.

"The gate is locked but they can easily get in over the fence around the land.

"Our fruit cage has been torn down and the kids' planted flowers were turned upside down and scattered all around the allotment, just as they were starting to bloom.

"Our neighbour's greenhouse has also been ruined, with what looks like a metal pole, leaving glass everywhere.

"It's getting really bad now and people no longer want to be there."

Mrs Mullarkey is hoping to get deterrents in place to try and discourage more vandalism happening.

She added: "Other plot owners have called the police and I've contacted the plot officer to see if we could get barbed wire installed along the fence where the people climb over, or CCTV to try and catch whoever is damaging the plots.

"It's sad because the plot is somewhere for my daughters to go and enjoy, but things are getting worse.

"I'm running out of ideas and soon we'll just move on from the plot."
