It has been irritating neighbours for days but an alarm which has not stopped since the start of the week has now attracted the attention of the police.
Officers were called to the alleyway between the former Warings furniture shop and Owl Sanctuary pub in Cattle Market Street at about 9.50pm on Tuesday night.
A concerned passer-by reported the alarm going off and on their arrival cops found a group of teenagers loitering around the Grade II listed Crystal House building.
The group fled towards St Peter Parmentergate Church, which is now used as a shop and skate park by Drug Store, but officers found no signs of vandalism or a break-in with no additional damage to the building visible.
Officers could be seen talking to members of the public shortly after the alert.
A police spokeswoman said the officers left the scene without any incident to deal with.
The pub, formerly the Marquee and the Owl Sanctuary, closed in 2016 but plans to transform the site into housing are yet to be brought to life.
