A kebab shop on the outskirts of the city centre is in hot water after being given a one-star food hygiene rating.

Britannia Kebab and Fish Bar, in Cadge Road, was inspected by Norwich City Council food and safety officers on January 20.

That report of the Earlham takeaway has now been published and points to "major improvements" that its management must work on.

From staff not washing their hands to filthy kitchen items left unchecked, the report states: "The changes required require urgent attention."

Officers said there is also a "major non-compliance with legal requirements" and a revisit is planned with "formal enforcement action likely".

The Evening News has attempted to contact Britannia Kebab and Fish Bar for comment.

Among the issues highlighted was the blade of a can opener being "encrusted with food"  and potentially causing cross-contamination.

A lack of handwashing was highlighted, as was the need to keep chopping boards clean, but pest control was deemed to be sufficient.

Temperature control was also contravening minimum standards, such as kebab meat being kept in a bain marie at 60.1C, which is below the 63C minimum.

The report also pointed to a lack of a food management system and to some staff not being suitably supervised, instructed and/or trained in food hygiene.

The observer added: "I note from records that you have previously been advised of the need have a Food Safety Management System available on site.

"However, during this inspection, you were still unable to present a Food Safety Management System. This has therefore had a negative impact on your food hygiene rating score."

Businesses do not have to display the rating at their premises but are encouraged to do so.

The local authority food safety officer has several enforcement options available as well as giving advice and guidance to make sure improvements are made when a business is given a low rating.
