A school alarm kept neighbours up for most of the night as it rang until the early hours of the morning.

The alarm at Thorpe St Andrew School allegedly began going off Tuesday early evening with some mistaking it for a car alarm because it was so loud.

Neighbours in the area woke up exhausted on Wednesday as the alarm did not stop until around 3.30am.

Mrs Martin, who lives in Plumstead Road, said: “I didn’t realise it was the alarm at the school, it sounded like a car horn being constantly pushed.

“We thought it was some sort of car accident but then it went on for too long for it to be that.”

She said that the loud ongoing noise also stopped her husband and son from getting to sleep.

She added: “It was awful, you wanted to sleep but it was like a droning in the background.

"We aren't even that close to it compared to some, we are on the Heartsease roundabout.”

Broadland District councillor for Thorpe St Andrew, Ian Mackie, said: “It appears that the school alarm started in the early evening and was going off until nearly 4am.

“Obviously this has caused a sleepless night and distress to a number of residents.

“I have written to the school to request that they improve their response to these types of out-of-hours incidents.”

Mr Mackie is also aware that this is not the first time this has happened.

He added: “Some neighbours have also complained that during the holidays the school bell still rings at the start, break and close of the day.

“We all like to be good neighbours so I am sure the school will want to take action.”

The school has been contacted for comment.
