A section of city centre land once planned to be used for a supermarket could soon be used for new homes, it has been revealed.

The land at Bishop Bridge Street, near the Ketts Hill roundabout, had been caught up in a seven-year saga, with a Lidl store previously planned for the site.

In 2014, the German discount supermarket lodged a bid to build a new branch but in 2021 - after multiple applications were turned down by Norwich City Council - the application was withdrawn.

The 0.84-acre plot is half of the site once home to the Value Car Centre, which still operates to the right-hand side of the land now up for grabs.

It is allocated in the Norwich Local Plan residential development for around 30 houses.

Norwich commercial real estate agency Brown&Co has produced an indicative illustration showing 34 units can be accommodated on the site, with views overlooking the cathedral.

A new strip of houses has recently been built along Kett's Hill behind the planned development.

Andrew Haigh, commercial surveyor at Brown&Co, said: "In the adopted and emerging Local Plan the site is identified for residential development as part of a larger site area to include the adjacent land and the redundant gas holder.

"No planning has been submitted, but indicative proposals have been drafted to show how it might be developed.

"We would consider offers on an unconditional basis or conditional on planning approval. The price would vary depending on the nature of the offer.
