A long-standing family butcher's shop and popular carvery takeaway are for sale but hopes remain it can be taken on by another entrepreneur.

E E Pratt & Co in Drayton High Road, Drayton, five miles out of Norwich, remains open after being put up for sale last autumn for £475,000 by Brown&Co.

The firm is selling the property, which includes the butcher's counter and hot food sales area, for £425,000.

Drayton Parish Council chairman Graham Everett, who has lived in the village for 13 years, said the butchers had been open for around 50 years and was currently run by Richard Pratt.

Mr Pratt took it on from his father, who was passed on the business by his father.

The Evening News attempted to contact Mr Pratt but he was not available to comment.

Speaking as a Drayton homeowner, Mr Everett, 68, of Manor Farm Close, said: "The owner is of an age where he wants to retire. He wants someone to take it on.

"It is a very good and well-used business. The owner is a good local guy who supports the community."

He added the hot food carvery takeaway aspect of the business was popular with many in the village including workmen who are building large numbers of new homes in Drayton, but added supermarket prices had changed the retail market.

Mr Everett said the parish council would discuss potential future plans for the building if a change of use application was put in for it.

Anna Smith, commercial surveyor at Brown&Co in Norwich, said: "Fixtures and fittings may be available to purchase by separate negotiation.

"The building is being sold as a whole. However, the building would lend itself to being split into two retail units.

"The property would be suitable for alternative uses subject to planning."

There are no other butcher's shops in Drayton.
