A mum who received devastating news that more than half her liver was cancerous has said, thanks to hundreds of generous city folk, she can now afford a "life-changing" treatment.

Sarah McGowan, who lives off Silver Road with her partner and four-year-old daughter, was initially "so nervous to ask for help" after finding out she had been diagnosed with bowel cancer on July 1, 2022.

However thanks to donations from 730 people totalling just under £30,000 the 33-year-old has now been able to get hold of a private drug Bevacizumab, more commonly know as Avastin, which will allow her to spend more precious time with her daughter.

Seeing the original £25,000 target reached in just five days, Sarah said: "It was crazy - I had no idea it would happen so quickly.

"I'm really humbled and in a state of shock really.

"With so many horrible things happening in the world I'm really grateful to everyone who's donated so far.

"After my scans in early February the free treatment, which was originally working, was slowing down and the tumors had returned and took up an estimated half of my liver so this couldn't have come at a better time.

"This gives me an opportunity to keep going."

Avastin costs £600 every three weeks which Sarah was able to begin on February 27 with the money received from the GoFundMe.

She added: "I was able to book in a private treatment because I was so poorly - something I couldn't have done without the money donated.

"I didn't expect at 33 to get such a shocking diagnosis and then for my initial treatment to stop working.

"It's indescribable just how much of a boost this has had on my mental health and the fact I can spend more time with my daughter.

"Hopefully with the drug I'll start feeling a lot better soon."
