Commuters at a busy bus stop got a nasty surprise after what appeared to be human poo was splattered on one of the seats - and wasn't cleaned up for five days.

The bus stop, in Red Lion Street next to Barclays Bank, serves the number 25, 26 and 26A busses in and out of the city centre.

However, the "disgusting" mess smearing the seat was due to be cleaned properly on Tuesday afternoon after first being discovered last week.

Caz James, who lives in the Golden Triangle, first noticed the mess on Friday, March 24.

The 67-year-old said: "I was getting the bus back from the city after doing some shopping and noticed it.

"It was disgusting and I honestly felt a bit sick looking at it.

"When the bus arrived I spoke to the driver who said it was the city council's responsibility so I tried to report it.

"I was on hold for more than half an hour before I had to attend an optician's appointment."

Ms James then e-mailed the council but was surprised to see the muck was still there on Tuesday, adding: "I would've thought it would be cleared by now.

"It constitutes a health hazard and is horrible to see or be near when waiting at the bus stop."

A Norwich City Council spokeswoman said: "We would like to thank the person for taking the time to report the issue to us.

"An order has been raised and will be cleared up as a matter of priority, which should be before the end of the day [Tuesday]."

The bench has now been cleaned, with Ms James adding: "It would be awful if for some reason someone didn't notice it was there and sat down.

"The simple solution was for the council to come and clean it - it shouldn't take long at all."
