A group of school friends are set to reunite to remember a teacher who introduced them to rock and roll 30 years ago.

The inspirational teacher, Ian Lord, taught music at the Hewett School from 1987 to 2003 and died last year aged 72.

Former pupils of Mr Lord's are reuniting and heading back to their former stomping ground to play at the ‘Lordstock’ gig at the Lakenham school's Walter Roy Theatre.

Mr Lord's daughter Caron Robinson said the idea for a reunion gig came when the old school friends gathered for her dad’s funeral last November.

“Dad must have inspired hundreds of kids to pick up guitars and form bands over the years, and the funeral felt like a reunion as well as a celebration of his life," she said.

“We started talking about how much fun it would be to play a tribute concert and realised with so much talent to call upon we could make it happen and make it really good.”

Among those appearing at the special gig on Sunday, April 30 will be percussionist Hugh Wilkinson who has performed with the likes of Quincy Jones and Goldie.

Hugh said: “It’s going to be great playing with everyone again, just like all those years ago.”

Mark Read will also attend, who was the musical director for Norwich Theatre Royal’s most recent pantomime.

But some people like Matt Gant will be performing for the first time in decades to remember their teacher.

Matt went on to be a production designer for TV and film, his credits include Sky show Gangs of London and Netflix’s Shadow and Bone.

The guitarist said: “Ian was a huge influence on us all and gave me a lifelong love of the guitar.

“I’ve been practising so I can do him justice.”

The gig is between 3pm and 5pm on April 30. Tickets are available at eventbrite.com for £5 and under-16s go free, with all profits going to Diabetes UK.
