A Chinese takeaway has been told "major improvement" is necessary after it was given a one-star food hygiene rating.

New China, in Thunder Lane, Thorpe St Andrew, has been told it needs to improve in all categories after being visited by inspectors from Broadland District Council last month.

Inspectors said systems and checks to ensure food was safe to eat were well below the expected standard and told the takeaway's bosses they need to ensure staff had correct hygiene training.

They said "major improvement" was necessary but those carrying out the inspection said they had confidence standards will be maintained in future.

The report also found the handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage was not hygienic and needed improvement.

It also said the cleanliness and condition of the business facilities needed improvement.

Reviews left on Tripadvisor supported the inspection's findings with 10 of the restaurant's 17 reviewers rating it "terrible", the site's lowest rating.

A recent review said: "I literally just got takeaway delivered, it was pathetic.

"Food was cold and when I tried to call to complain I was insulted."

It averages 3.7 out of five from more than 100 Google reviews but four of the last five have all been just one star.

New China declined to comment.
