Snatched sunflower seedlings have left an allotment enthusiast upset to see her community robbed of the bright, eye-catching plants.

Sarah Eglington, who tends to an allotment in Elm Grove Lane, put 80 seedlings in the garden of her NR3 home to be collected, thinking they would be safe.

The 46-year-old said: “Every year at my allotment I have lots of sunflowers and over winter they drop their seeds, so this time of year I have lots of seedlings.

“I put a post on Facebook because I thought it would be nice to fill NR3 with them.”

Sarah soon had lots of people interested and the first 80 she dug up went to local schools.

She said: “So many people were interested that I dug up 80 more, and hid them behind my wall where no one could see them, but when a lady went to pick them up, they were gone.

“It was annoying having to message everyone who could no longer have their flowers.

“What would someone do with 80 sunflowers? It is so disappointing that someone would be so selfish to take them all!”

Sarah is hopeful that the sunflowers will either be planted or returned so that her hard work is not wasted.
