The saga of a disused piece of street furniture which was deemed dangerous by those living nearby has finally come to an end.

Efforts to have the disused Virgin Media box in Bowthorpe removed were sparked after it was battered by vandals in March, leaving some rusty, jagged edges exposed.

Neighbours were thrilled to see an engineer on Dragonfly Way quickly following an initial story by the Evening News but on May 3 it was reported that the box was still there.

Instead of being removed, it was surrounded by a barrier, but not long after the vandalism continued and the box was left in a worse state.

Now, Joanna de Vincentiis, who lives nearby, said: "I’m thrilled that the damaged box has finally been replaced - I was so worried that a young child passing by the damaged box could have easily hurt themselves on the broken and rusty metal.

"I’d like to thank the Evening News for once again coming to our rescue.

"Our community thrives once more!"

A spokesman from Virgin Media said: “While the cabinet is not in operation today, it is likely it will be used in future.”
