A four-bedroom home named after the priest who founded one of the city’s landmark churches is for sale in the Norwich Lanes – and for £30,000 less than when it first hit the market in June last year.
A spokesperson for selling agents Sowerbys describes this Grade II listed, four-bedroom home as “idiosyncratic”, and says it proudly boasts the name of the priest – Elwyn – who founded St Giles Church nearby.
Parts of Elwyn House are believed to date back to the 17th century, and it boasts an eclectic mix of period features, including exposed beams and sash windows. It first appeared on the market with Savills last summer but is now listed for sale with Sowerbys at £695,000.
The property is entered through a typical Georgian door at the front, which leads into a dining room with a wood-burning stove set into an exposed brick fireplace and a sash window with its original stained glass.
In contrast, the kitchen is modern and well-fitted and features an island and breakfast bar for informal dining and entertaining, while a utility and cloakroom completes the ground floor.

The first-floor reception room is one of the finest in the house. Among its highlights are its exposed timbers, yet another fireplace and a sash window overlooking St Giles Church and the city beyond.
The first of the bedrooms is also located on this floor – but it could be used as a further reception room or even a study and is served by a family bathroom.
Outside, there is a private and sheltered courtyard garden, which is rare for such a central location and has been lovingly tended to by the current owners. Sowerbys describes it as an “oasis of calm”, offering a combination of well-stocked beds and a timber storage shed.
The second floor has two double bedrooms – including one which could be used as a further reception space, study or even a dressing room – and on the top floor there is another bedroom with an en suite shower room.
This bedroom also has direct access to a small roof terrace, which offers lovely views of St Giles Church and across Norwich’s rooftops.
