People have been warned about the "grave consequences" of wheelie bin fires after a blaze in Norwich.

The warning from the Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service comes after a blue recycling bin was found burnt out in Sprowston Road over the weekend.

It is unclear whether the blaze was started deliberately but Terry Pinto, the prevention lead at the Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service, said any bin fire should be considered extremely dangerous.

"Any fire can be a threat to life and to property," he said. "That’s doubly so when the fire starts in something we all keep close to our homes.

"Whether started deliberately or accidentally, wheelie bin fires can have grave consequences.

"To stay safe, store your bin somewhere secure and out of sight if you can, especially avoid storing it in covered areas attached to your home and keeping it at least one metre away from your property.

"Bin fires release toxic fumes, if you become aware of one, call 999 and keep your doors and windows closed."
