An angry community battling to prevent a 5G mast going up in their neighbourhood claim it would "compromise the safety of all pedestrians".

The 17m mast, which is to be erected by Clarke Telecoms on the corner of Wall Road near Sewell Park Academy in NR3, is set to improve web speeds for people around the outskirts of the city centre, with a consultation deadline of June 13.

Jo Jones, who lives in St Clements Hill, raised almost 100 signatures from neighbours to appeal the production of the 5G mast and accompanying box near their homes.

The 62-year-old has delivered the petition to City Hall and said: "Norwich City Council wants to promote Norwich as a 'Fine City' but by placing a 5G mast in these areas, we feel it goes completely against that objective.

"The site is totally unsuitable as it will compromise the safety of all pedestrians.

"The loss of pavement space will increase the possibility of a serious, potentially fatal, accident involving either school children, vulnerable elderly pedestrians and the disabled or able-bodied alike.

"There are two nursing homes close by and we regularly see wheelchair or mobility scooter users trying to cross there, whose safety we feel will be compromised.

"This is a very dangerous, busy junction and has been the scene of many accidents over the years."

More than 30 public objections have been lodged about the application on the city council's online planning portal but Norfolk County Council's highways department has said it has no objections to the mast's proposed positioning.

Many are questioning why another mast is needed when there is already one close by on Constitution Hill.

Mrs Jones added: "The visual impact of the 5G mast and its industrial-sized equipment boxes would be totally out of keeping with the area.

"The equipment boxes are a blank canvas for graffiti which has already happened to the ones at the Constitution Hill roundabout."
