Concerns have been raised about proposals which could see a busy petrol station on the A47 demolished and rebuilt.

Plans to demolish and rebuild the Brundall Service Station on Yarmouth Road have been submitted to Broadland District Council by its owners Shell UK.

The fuel company wants to tear down the existing buildings and forecourt on the site, to replace them with a new sales building, a forecourt with underground tanks, pumps and canopy, car parking spaces and bays to charge electric vehicles.

The latest plans are a revision of previous proposals, withdrawn after National Highways lodged an 'in principle' objection, amid concerns the layout could have caused cars to block the site entrance and access to the McDonald's next door.

But councillor Eleanor Laming, who represents Brundall on Broadland District Council, still fears the replacement petrol station will put more pressure on roads and threaten the safety of the nearby roundabout.

She said traffic is likely to increase further due to the new Brundall Sports Hub, which opened this month.

In her response to the planning application, she said: "This is already an issue
and will become more so as developments already planned for the surrounding area are completed.

"This outlet could be open 24 hours a day, and the planning statement indicates that an increase in demand is expected on existing petrol stations as numbers of these decrease nationally and the number of vehicles on the road increase.

"It can be expected that vehicle movements to and from the facility will increase putting more pressure on the road system."

However, officers in Norfolk County Council's highways department said they will not oppose the application, although they have asked for conditions, including that a scheme for where construction workers will park is drawn up.

A decision on whether to grant permission will be made by Broadland in due course.
