Folk living near a derelict leisure club on the city outskirts have called for the site to be made more secure following a recent spike in anti-social behaviour.

The former Oasis Sports and Leisure Club in Thorpe St Andrew has been empty since 2016.

Since then, plans have been in place to convert the Pound Lane site into a care village consisting of 24 assisted bungalows, 20 assisted flats, management offices and a cafe.

But with the development still being in the early stages, the building has remained derelict - prompting a number of youngsters to use it for anti-social behaviour.

"There have been incidents including smashed windows and litter being left there and on the field nearby," said district councillor for Thorpe St Andrew, Jonathan Emsell.

"The care village is great for our area but things appear to have stalled slightly.

"Once fencing is put up and building resumes it will obviously make it more difficult for people to carry out this sort of behaviour.

"Until then, the town council are working with the police and developers to make the site more secure."

The former leisure club was severely damaged in an arson attack early last year.

It is one of a number of derelict sites in the Norwich area to have been attacked in recent years - with Hellesdon Hospital and Pinebanks and Langley Preparatory School sites in Thorpe St Andrew all meeting a similar fate.

"Police have been out to the former Oasis building a number of times," added Cllr Emsell.

"There have been reports of people throwing things out of the window and glass being shattered.

"We hope that things will improve as more work is carried out on the development."
