Major roadworks are to start at a busy city junction on Monday, with disruption due to last almost eight weeks.

The works, at the Boundary junction where Mile Cross meets Hellesdon, will be carried out in four phases, between July 10 to August 31.

The project involves the replacement of all the traffic lights and resurfacing of the road.

The A140 Aylsham Road and Cromer Road, and Reepham Road, will be closed at the junction for a number of weeks and signed diversion routes will be in place.

Resurfacing work will be carried out at night to reduce the impact on drivers and businesses.

Phase one will see works to the north and south of the junction.

Phase two focuses on the centre island.

Phase three involves the installation of traffic lights and carriageway resurfacing.

Finally, phase four will see the traffic signals tested.

The work involves installing 650m of underground ducting, 14 underground inspection chambers and 16 fixings for the new traffic signal poles.

In total, 41 new traffic signal poles will be installed.

New LED traffic lights will cut power consumption.

The ring road at Boundary Road and Mile Cross Lane will remain open throughout the majority of the works.

The work was postponed last year amid complaints from business owners, drivers and councillors about the overall volume of roadworks in the area.

Norfolk County Council has confirmed the work will cost £500,000 for carriageway resurfacing and £300,000 for the replacement of traffic signals.
