Roadworks at a busy city junction are causing traffic chaos with some bus services experiencing 90-minute delays.

Boundary Road, where Mile Cross meets Hellesdon, is closed for eight weeks for the major project expected to cost £800,000 in total.

Engineers started work today (July 10) which has caused huge delays, forcing Sanders Coaches to suspend its services in the area.

The company warned passengers, stating: "Unfortunately this morning’s delays had a detrimental effect on our services with some buses taking more than 90 minutes just to get through Hellesdon.

"We have therefore taken the difficult decision to suspend our services along Cromer Road and Aylsham Road.

"We apologise for the inconvenience this will cause to residents in these areas. Currently delays with a different diversion in place are about 12 to 15 minutes."

Work will be carried out in phases between July 10 to September 1, after it was postponed last year amid complaints from business owners, drivers and councillors due to the volume of roadworks in the area.

Last week, bus operators warned their services would be disrupted due to the works and that delays are likely.

The A140 Aylsham Road, Cromer Road, and Reepham Road, will be closed at the Boundary junction for several weeks and signed diversion routes will be in place.

The ring road at Boundary Road and Mile Cross Lane will remain open throughout the majority of the works.

Norfolk County Council has confirmed the work will cost £500,000 for carriageway resurfacing and £300,000 for the replacement of traffic signals.
