Run Norwich 2023 sees thousands line streets for 10km race

Competitors pounded the tarmac as they sped past landmarks including the cathedral, Carrow Road and the Forum.

And unlike 2022's washout, some blustery conditions helped to keep everyone cool despite fears high winds could affect the day. 

The winners have been confirmed as defending champion Logan Smith for the men's race, with a provisional time of 31 minutes and 30 seconds, eight seconds slower than last year.

Fellow City of Norwich AC runner Mabel Beckett won the women's race in a provisional time of 35.33mins, in 33rd place overall, just 11 seconds ahead of last year's winner Anya Culling - who she had finished second to last year.

The medalists all received a round of applause as they stood on the podium on the steps of City Hall to receive their prizes.

There was a real party atmosphere around the city centre with brass bands, DJs and spectators helping to keep up the morale of the runners.

It was the seventh iteration of the event, which started in 2015 and is organised by the Community Sports Foundation (CSF), helping raise thousands for charities through people sponsoring competitors.

Norwich City skipper Grant Hanley and the CSF cerebral palsy team started the race, with notable finishers including Canaries legend Wes Hoolahan (53rd in 36.22mins) and Lord Mayor of Norwich, James Wright.

There were 8,500 entrants this year with 17pc of them using the opportunity to attempt to finish their first 10km.

Provisional results show that 6,761 runners crossed the line - which is a record turnout for the event.

CSF chief executive Ian Thornton said: “Once again, the city of Norwich came out in force for another incredible race.

“I’m so proud of everyone here at the Foundation, and of course our army of incredible volunteers, for putting on such a first-class event for so many people.

“Yesterday’s yellow weather warning and strong winds meant we couldn’t erect marquees, gazebos or branding and therefore a lot of last-minute changes to plans we’ve had in place for months. But I’m so proud of how everyone reacted to these challenges.

“I’d like to thank all our partners, especially main sponsors Anglian Home Improvements, for their understanding in regards to this.”
