Plans to open a new world food supermarket in Norwich have been given the go-ahead despite objectors describing them as "a very bland affair".

Fresh Desh will now open at 20 Magdalen Street in the Grade III-listed former home of Ajman Miah and Company offering dry and cooled international foods.

Work will see owner, Mr M Akbar, install new fridges and make alterations to the "dilapidated" shopfront with plans to strip out its interior and install new hanging signs.

The approval from Norwich City Council comes despite a number of public objections arguing the plans did not fit in with the surrounding area.

One objection, submitted on March 8, stated: "The proposed design is a very bland affair, which does not sit well with the building itself or the surrounding area.

"The signage as shown in the documentation is particularly out of sympathy.

"The desired improvements could easily be achieved by restoration and repair.

"There are many examples of such an approach already in Magdalen Street, and the area has seen sympathetic restoration in the past."

As part of the work, the shop's entrance will see a total overhaul with the current two-door set-up to be replaced with a grey front with glass double doors.
