A city ice cream man who has served whipped delights for decades says his usually bustling summer trade has been frozen by road closures.

Mike Reeve, who pitches up in Gurney Road on Mousehold Heath each day, says diversions for roadworks at the Kett's Hill Roundabout, which started on July 3, have meant fewer cars have been visiting him - with trade falling by around 70pc.

Mike also blames gloomy weather for the lull in trade saying a combination of the two has provided a "perfect storm".

He says the end of the closures cannot come soon enough, with £64,000 of work to improve safety at the Gurney Road roundabout expected to finish on August 11.

Mike said: "It has got better recently, but when it all started trade was down 70pc.

"We're getting business as people use the road as a through road to avoid the works going down Britannia Road.

"But at the end of the day you've got a road closed sign at the top of the road and one at the bottom so it's putting people off coming down here.

"You only have to look at the road to see what's happening, there's not even half the amount of cars travelling done there.

"The schools being off doesn't help either, as usually the Norwich School lot stop off for an ice cream.

"But it's her at Kett's Hill Bakery I feel sorry for the most, she's got it all in front of her shop."

He said regular customers were still making the effort to visit his van but said he felt more could have been done to mitigate the impact of works.

Mr Reeve added: "I really appreciate all the regulars still coming out and supporting me.

"But the council just don't think about us, they could've moved those signs further down the road.

"We've still got a bit of a way to go, we just need it to be over as soon as possible."
