An annual community fete, which was attended by 10,000 people last year, finally has a new home after the 2023 event was axed by the council.

The Costessey Fete and Fayre has been organised by Gary Blundell, 47, since 2014, who up until 2022 ran it with a team of volunteers on behalf of Costessey Town Council.

Mr Blundell, a district councillor for New Costessey, transformed it from "a very small village fete" to a huge two-day event with stalls, entertainment and fireworks.

It previously took place every spring in Longwater Lane Park, except for 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic.

However, at a private council meeting held in October 2022, the decision was made to cancel the 2023 event and look to adapt it.

Mr Blundell said: "The main council complaint was about noise and traffic, but I am trying to move on from that situation now and am running the event independently."

The Costessey Fete and Fayre is now a Community Interest Company (CIC) and Mr Blundell is organising it with local DJ Jeremy 'Jezza' King, who has many years of experience in the entertainment industry.

It has now been confirmed that the event will take place at the Norfolk Showground over the weekend of May 18 and 19 in 2024.

The times will be approximately from 10am to 10.30pm on Saturday and 10am to 8pm on Sunday.

Entry will cost £2, with under-fives free, and there will be up to 200 stalls, a funfair, live bands, community groups, animal displays and more.

Mr Blundell said: "It will have the same ethos of supporting as many community groups as possible - just on a bigger scale.

"There will also be a street food village and various zones - like a mini Norfolk Show.

"We could not have done this without the massive support from Russen and Hill Estate Agents in Costessey."
