A new "floating" bus stop is due to be installed on a section of busy road as part of ongoing works in and around Norwich.

The new bus stop, planned for a section of Dereham Road near its junction with Richmond Road in Costessey, is one of a number of proposed highway works along Dereham Road.

To make way for this new stop, the existing layby outside of houses number 300 to 294 will be removed and the new "floating" bus stop will be installed.

It would consist of a path for cyclists to pass behind it, adjacent to the footpath, that the council claim will minimise potentially dangerous situations and traffic delays.

Initial plans were to have the new stop installed further west along the road but were later changed following a public consultation held by Norfolk County Council in November in which a number of concerns were raised about the space being too narrow.

New Costessey ward councillor Gary Blundell said this week: "To minimise the impact on traffic, the bus stop location has been moved eastwards for a short distance.

"As it will be within the proposed bus lane, the general traffic won't be held by a stopped bus.

"This layout would provide the space required for a safer segregated footway and cycleway around the bus stop location, with local drainage to make sure there won't be any standing water."

A spokesman for the council's highways team added: "I don't know when exactly this bus stop will be installed, but this section of Dereham Road works are due to begin next month.

"The new bus stop will be located within the newly created bus lane and therefore will not hold up traffic in Dereham Road."

An updated proposal letter will be sent to residents in the coming days.
