The pronunciation of Norfolk towns and villages proves contentious across Nelson's County and the Fine City has its very own debates.

Sprowston has seen thousands of homes built in the town in the past decade and that has brought fresh uncertainty.

Among city folk there tends to be two distinct pronunciations, which has been the talk of the town's community Facebook group.

One sounds like Sp-roo-ston and the other sounds like Spr-owh-ston, and both sides of the argument believe they are correct.

Bill Couzens, chairman of Sprowston Town Council, said: “I pronounce it with the row as in row a boat and the ston on the end I say as stun.”

However, Bill’s wife pronounces it differently.  

The councillor said: “My wife says the prow as in the prow of a boat, but she also says stun instead of ston.

“According to the book A History of Sprowston, published in 2000, the town was recorded in the Doomsday book as Sprowestuna - the land of Sprow, presumably a Saxon Chief, and "tun" the Anglo Saxon term for a settlement which was settled shortly after the Norman Conquest of 1066.

“However, the book does not give any indication of the modern pronunciation.

"I would say both are perfectly acceptable."

Sprowston Sports and Social Club has been a beloved venue in the town for many years, and its new committee have been working to bring the club back into the forefront of the community.  

Now they want in on the debate about the pronunciation, considering it is in their name.

Wendy Denyer, treasurer of the Blue Boar Lane club, said: "I say the 'Sprow' like brow.

"With it being spelled the way it is, the English language would suggest that is the correct way to say it - that is how we say it here anyway!”
