Suffield Arms pub releases new beer with Lacons Brewery

The Suffield Arms, located on Station Road in Thorpe Market, is known for its Mediterranean food menu and wide selection of beers.

But with prices rising in almost every area of life, assistant manager George Ash said the pub and restaurant had been “dramatically” impacted by the cost of beer - particularly those they were having to import from abroad.

He said: “Being a traditional Mediterranean tapas restaurant, we try to keep beers within the same theme and serve beer like Peroni and Mahou.

“Unlike a lot of other brands they’re still brewed in their origin regions of Spain and Italy. 

“We do love that they have the authenticity factor, but the problem is that as well as the base price going up in line with all beer, we’ve also seen a hike in transport costs to get them here.”

And with customers also feeling the pinch, Mr Ash said they wanted to avoid passing the costs onto their patrons.

Instead, the pub has teamed up with Great Yarmouth-based Lacons Brewery to create a new, custom lager to rival the European classics - without the import costs.

The Suffield Helles is a 3.8pc lager, designed by the restaurant’s head chef to compliment the Mediterranean menu. 

Mr Ash said: “It's a stunning beer and best of all, we’re not having to pay to transport it, because the brewery is just around the corner.

“We’re hoping that it will help us to regain some of our past custom that can’t afford to drink the usual premium lagers.

“I’m very passionate about bringing back the bar trade and making the bars the nostalgic social space they once used to be.”
