City driving instructors are still struggling to clear their Covid backlogs, with even a new school being fully booked until April 2024.
Tara Read, owner of Limitless Automatic Driving Tuition in Sprowston, opened her books in October but has already had to turn pupils away due to high demand.
Tara, who has been an instructor for four years, said: “People were being paid furlough but no way to spend it so they had money they had not had before.
“The pandemic also saw lots of people relocating which meant the change in circumstances meant they needed to learn to drive – all that has created excessive demand.”
Tara’s school teaches exclusively in automatic cars and has found that interest in ditching gears is growing every year, going hand in hand with trends in the automotive industry.

She continued: “Many of my pupils have tried manual in the past and struggled or not enjoyed the stress of the gears.
“Many also believe they can pass faster in an automatic as there isn’t so much to grasp.
“But I find I teach lots of people who have severe anxiety or additional learning needs – they wouldn’t be able to cope with learning in a manual, so they come to me.”

Tara has a waiting list so urges people who are turning 17 next year to get on the list now if they want to learn with her.
She said: “I am a very relaxed and friendly teacher and I will teach at the pace which suits the pupil best.”

Tara is also on the lookout for more instructors to increase the number of pupils she can take on.
Getting behind the wheel
Tara thinks people should learn to drive if they can as it opens many doors.
She added: “You gain so much independence as soon as you pass, and it opens more career opportunities.”
But Tara believes there are things people should do before they learn to drive:
- Make sure you are learning to drive for yourself and not because someone is pushing you.
- It is very expensive, so ensure you can afford to drive before you spend lots of money on lessons.
- Keep at it, some people find it much harder than they anticipated, but when you pass your test it will be worth it.
