Plans for new Poundland in St Stephens Street in Norwich

This newspaper revealed on Monday that Poundland would be moving into 23-29 St Stephens Street.

It was unclear how much of the unit would be occupied by the company though.

However, the firm has now submitted official plans to take over the entire premises - making it one of the largest Poundlands in the country.

A Poundland spokesman has said it intends to move into the store "early in the new year" after its Riverside store closes on Christmas Eve.

British Home Stores (BHS) left the St Stephens site in August 2016 as the department store disappeared from the nation's high streets.

Primark then temporarily moved in from April 2018 until December 2019 while its Haymarket shop underwent a huge renovation.

The company, however, is yet to comment on the future of the Poundland branch located across the road at 48-54 St Stephens Street.

It also has shops in Castle Quarter and Anglia Square.

The plans now await approval from Norwich City Council.
