A new bus lane is being proposed as part of more changes to a regularly congested key route into the city.

The plans are for a portion of a £50m funding pot, awarded to Norfolk County Council by the Department of Transport, to go towards a bus and cycle lane in Ipswich Road.

This would be implemented next to the Holiday Inn on the side of the road heading out of the city, leading to the traffic lights at the junction with Hall Road.

The short length of bus and cycle lane would use the existing road space, replacing the left-hand lane between the Holiday Inn junction and the traffic lights.

This would also see the removal of the current right turn into Holiday Inn for city-bound traffic.

There are no changes to the existing walking and cycling facilities but the county council believe it will improve bus reliability, including for services to Long Stratton and Diss as well as the nearby Harford Park and Ride site.

The project is one of several in Norfolk’s Bus Service Improvement Plan, designed to reduce congestion and delays to buses at existing pinch points along current routes by increasing capacity for buses.

One of the other recent proposals from the council is a bus lane on the other side of Ipswich Road, coming off the Harford roundabout, which would see the verge widened to accommodate a bus-only lane.

The county council is asking for feedback on proposed changes, recently contacting people and businesses on how to find out more about the project and how to take part in its consultation.

Graham Plant, the county council's cabinet member for highways, infrastructure and transport, said: "These projects in Norwich offer a really positive start to bus improvements and will build on the excellent progress we've made with public transport infrastructure improvements through the Transforming Cities Fund."

The deadline for comments on the latest Ipswich Road changes is Monday, January 29 ahead of work potentially starting in the summer.

It can be completed norfolk.gov.uk/ipswichroadbuslane or by requesting a hard copy from the council.
