A small restaurant tucked away in a corner of the Norwich Lanes is making a big impact as it earns two AA Rosettes for culinary excellence.

Bishop's Dining Room in St Andrews Hill is owned by Alessandro Tranquillo and in August 2023 he appointed Barry Wood, 37, the new head chef.

It has proved to be the perfect pairing, just like the match between the extensive range of wines and dishes utilising local and seasonal produce.

Mr Wood said: "I was put in touch with Alessandro through Bread Hospitality and we clicked straight away - he said I could do what I wanted in the kitchen and to build my own team."

Restaurants in this category are "excellent" dining spots that demonstrate consistency and precision.

Mr Wood leads the kitchen team and he works alongside pastry chef Elliott Winson and sous chef David Kurucz.

Mr Wood has worked in various places across the city, including Prime, Benedicts and the WinePress Restaurant at The Maids Head Hotel.

At the latter, he worked as sous chef under Marcin 'Magic' Pomierny, with Mr Winson the junior sous, and they earned 2 AA Rosettes.

But earning the same accolade at Bishop's Dining Room is extra special for the Norwich-born chef as he is at the helm.

Mr Wood added: "I achieved two Rosettes as a sous chef and it is such a great feeling to get it as a head chef.

"I am really proud of the team - especially as it was our first table on the first service of the year and with a new menu.

"They also said that we weren't far off getting three."

The aim now is to get another Rosette, with the next inspection usually within six months to a year.
