The company tweeted the information at 11am today.
A spokesman for Cadent said: “Emergency works are taking place to repair a gas pipe under Angel Road in Norwich, following reports of a smell of gas that came in from a member of the public.
“Engineers immediately visited the location to investigate and have closed the road so that they can access the main where they suspect the escape is coming from.
“Our team suspects that there are a number of small escapes that need to be located and repaired before the road can be reopened, but they are working as quickly and as safely as possible to get this done.
“We’d like to thank residents for their understanding and patience as these repairs are completed. We would also like to remind everyone that if they ever suspect a gas leak then they should call the Gas Emergency number on 0800 111 999* as it may not be related to this incident. The number operates 24/7 and is free to call."
