A city pub could soon have a fresh look as plans for some upgrades have emerged.

Pub group Stonegate has applied for planning permission for The Lamb Inn ahead of the summer months.

If plans are approved, an outside bar will be built to the right of the entrance in the pub's courtyard in a permanent wooden structure with a hatch to serve customers on the side.

The canopy which covers a large portion of the courtyard is also set to be replaced, with new lighting installed to keep the area operating when it gets dark.

The inside of The Lamb Inn is also set for a large refurbishment, which will include a new coffee station, furniture, televisions, lighting, flooring and redecorating throughout the whole of the pub.

Property consultancy firm Bidwells has submitted the application to Norwich City Council and explained the plans further in a design and access statement.

This states: "As with all commercial hospitality and leisure facilities such as this, the applicant needs to continually refresh and enhance its customer offer and attraction at this public house, in order to remain commercially viable."

The pub is grade II listed and its building is thought to date back to the late 18th century, although its origins go back to being known as the Holy Lamb in the 13th century.

A fire caused damage in 1939 and the Orford Place site was extensively renovated in 1980.

It was controversially renamed in 1996 by the Scottish and Newcastle brewery, as the Rat and Parrott.

The pub became part of the Henry's chain in 2002 but was closed for a refurbishment in 2011 and returned to its traditional name of The Lamb Inn.

Stonegate has been approached for further comment on the plans.

The city council intends to make a decision on the plans by July 3.
