A 99-year-old former RAF flight engineer finally got his wish of one more mission in a Lancaster Bomber.
Ray Parke travelled to Lincolnshire Aviation Centre for a taxi ride in ‘Just Jane’ having flown 40 missions over Germany and the Netherlands during the Second World War in Lancasters.
Ray, who lives in Sprowston, said: “It was an incredible day, I can’t thank the people who set it up enough. Truly I am so grateful.
“It was the most uncomfortable ride I’ve ever had in a Lancaster though!”
Ray, who was positioned by the door, said it reminded him of a particular mission over Germany where the front windows were blown out by flak.
“All you could hear was the roar of the engines," he recalled.
"It just made me want to get back up to the skies like the old days.”
The taxi ride was set up as part of a documentary by University of East Anglia students that saw £5,000 raised to make it happen.
A large portion was raised by Jonny Cracknell, 41, from Poringland, who ran 29 miles between Ray’s old RAF airbases in Norfolk earlier this year.

Jonny was on board alongside Ray and his 10-year-old son Freddie on Wednesday, May 15.
He said: “I’m just so, so happy for Ray he was able to have his special day he so richly deserves.
“It was a proud and extremely emotional sight to witness him step foot back inside a Lancaster after all these years."

Ray wanted Freddie to ride alongside him to help pass stories on to younger generations.
Freddie added: “I had a brilliant day. It was amazing to be inside the plane with Ray and to follow my great-grandad's footsteps, who also flew in Lancasters.”
The ride was made possible by a final donation from Aviva, Ray’s former employer.
