A 201-mile cycling challenge across Norfolk and Suffolk will offer bike enthusiasts the opportunity to support a charity.

The Epic Cycle Challenge, organised by Ormiston Families, is set to take place on September 14 and 15, coinciding with locations where Ormiston offers supportive services.

The ride will bring cyclists through six prisons where Ormiston Family teams provide a comforting environment for families visiting loved ones.

As a show of their commitment, each participant will aim to raise £600 in sponsorship before undertaking the daunting ride, containing more than treble the uphill distance of London to Paris.

John Merralls, operations manager for Ormiston Families’ Prisoner Family Services, said: “This incredible challenge will demonstrate the scale of our work and give the riders an insight into a sector of society that for many most likely won’t have ever considered."

Day one we will begin at HMP Highpoint’s visitor centre, near Haverhill, before heading north around Bury St Edmunds and past Thetford Forest towards HMP Wayland for a lunch stop.

Riders will then head north-east to reach HMP Bure, at the old RAF Coltishall base, then into the city towards the HMP Norwich visitor centre. After a drinks break, a short ride to Dunston Hall will follow for the overnight accommodation.

Day two will meander through villages for almost 50 miles to HMP Warren Hill, near Felixstowe, and then a mile or so down the road to HMP Hollesley Bay for lunch.

The final stretch will be the longest, a 54-mile ride through Woodbridge and around Ipswich to Stowmarket for a refuel, the following country lanes back to HMP Highpoint.

Participants will be led by British Cycle qualified ride leaders, Daniel Coughlan and Sam Richardson of Ipswich-based Onventure.

Alongside guidance, cyclists receive training advice, support, food, drink, and overnight stay at Dunston Hall Hotel, all included in the £69 fee.

Gavin Lamb, senior fundraiser manager at Ormiston Families, added: “The Epic Cycle Challenge will be a chance for cycling fanatics to complete an incredible challenge, raise some money for families in their communities and see firsthand where that money could make a difference.”
