Norwich Evening News crown Barrons Fish Bar best city chippy

Barrons Fish Bar, in Costessey, has come out on top after readers voted in the Norwich Evening News' Your Favourite Awards.

The Norwich Road chippy beat four rivals to the 2024 title: Grosvenor Fish Bar in Lower Goat Lane, Thorpe Fish Bar in Yarmouth Road, The Little Fish Bar in Bowthorpe Road and Bishop Bridge Fish and Chips.

Barrons Fish Bar co-owners Michael Etheridge and Matthew Bonham will receive a trophy and vinyl banner for the win.

Michael, who started behind the shop's counter 27 years ago, said: "It's amazing to win and we're so thankful for all the support.

"There are so many good fish and chip shops around the city so to be nominated by the Evening News readers is great.

"We pride ourselves on being a traditional fish and chip shop - selling cod, chips, as well as battered sausages and burgers.

"However our batter is gluten-free so we can cater to anyone who is lactose intolerant and on the first Monday of the month we have a gluten-free day as well."

Michael added his customers are key to the shop's success, saying: "It's a community shop where we have our regulars come in and I've been here so long now I see children grow up to become adults who, in turn, bring their children in - which is so nice.

"My mum and dad also come in and help behind the scenes so it has a nice family feel.

"While it's a tough time for everyone, business has been pretty good and we've got no plans on stopping anytime soon."

Voting forms were run in the Evening News between April 15 and May 4, with the voting closed on May 4.
