Plans for a huge care facility on the outskirts of the city have emerged - three years after the developers were given the go-ahead. 

Nearly 100 new homes will be built on the edge of Rackheath as plans for an extra care facility have been filed to Broadland District Council, listed under the name Land At Green Lane East, Little Plumstead.

The 92-bed ancillary care home will be part of a larger development, which will also see 130 market and affordable houses and a medical centre built on a currently empty field.

Although outline permission was granted in June 2021, this is the first step that the Saffron Housing Trust, which will be building the care facility, has made to finalise the designs. 

In a planning statement, agents Ingleton Wood LLP, acting on behalf of the Saffron Housing Trust, said: "The facility will comprise self-contained flats that will enable elderly residents to retain their independence and remain active in the community, strengthened by the inclusion of communal spaces as well as outside areas.

"The model of care that is proposed is suitable for a range of care needs with staff on-site 24/7."

The site proposed for the building is around 12,000sqm and will feature a central three-storey block of flats with eight semi-detached bungalows along the northern boundary.

Planners are keen to keep a large amount of the site as green space, including areas of lawn, new trees, a wildlife garden and rear gardens for the bungalows.

Several communal areas have been planned into the development, with the ground floor of the flat block comprising of a reception area, a living and dining area, a meeting room, a salon and a seating area.

No timeline for the work has emerged but Broadland District Council is aiming to decide about the plans by September 17.
