A city barbershop closed its doors after 40 fruitful years in May but a new one has moved straight in and is hoping to fill the gap.

Elliot Branford, 34, has opened Grow in the former Hiz Hair premises in Tombland after gaining 10 years of experience in the industry.

He spent five of those at Courage Noble in King Street and was sad to leave but knew he was ready for his next challenge.

"I have wanted my own shop for a while now and had been looking online but the locations just weren't quite right and that wasn't something I was willing to compromise on," he explained.

"I started to walk around and ask people if I could buy their businesses and I got quite lucky with Hiz Hair because the timing was just right."

Mr Branford and his colleague, Tommy Baker, offer a full consultation service which they feel sets them apart from any competition.

"I try not to be an 'in and out' barber," Mr Branford said.

"I really listen when people are telling me what they want and we also offer a hair wash and refreshments to make the trip a whole experience."

He added this helps to build relationships with his clients - many of whom have become his friends over the years and followed him to his new shop.

"When I was training to be a barber someone told me 'if you can't afford therapy, go and get a haircut' and it's so true.

"Men are especially reluctant to open up about their mental health but when they are in the chair they end up speaking and sharing all sorts.

"Sometimes all it takes is a neutral pair of ears to help you feel better about a problem.

"Those chats are the best part of the job for me - I love meeting people from all walks of life because everyone can teach you something."
