A man who was found to have cocaine and cannabis in his system while driving in Norwich has been banned from driving for a year and fined almost £1,000.

Brandon Birch, 28, previously of The Avenue in Adlington, Lancashire, was stopped in Newmarket Road at 4.05pm on December 20 last year after being seen to "accelerate fast, causing excessive noise" while driving a Honda Civic.

Birch took a saliva test and was arrested before being taken to Wymondham Police Investigation Centre.

Collette Harper, prosecuting at Norwich Magistrates Court on Friday, said Birch had "excess levels of cocaine and tetrahydrocannabinol - a cannabinoid found in cannabis - in his blood".

Birch, representing himself, said: "I'm extremely sorry.

"I've let everyone down and just feel very guilty and ashamed of everything that's come from this.

"It's affected my life in a very big way.

"I'd like to apologise, get through this and learn from my mistakes."

Gillian Philpott, chairwoman of the bench, disqualified Birch from driving for 12 months and fined him a total of £946.

Birch's "previous good character" and "real remorse of what he'd done" were taken into account.
