Builders have been asked to leave more space on the only road in and out of a city estate after locals highlighted "an accident waiting to happen".

Work on the £1m Viking Centre project in Sprowston started in February but has seen issues arise in Tills Road.

Chairman of Sprowston Town Council, Bill Couzens, said he would speak to workers about "leaving a little more space for pedestrians".

Mr Couzens also tried to quash fears of those having to walk across the grass verge on which the vehicles are being parked.

He said: "I'd like to make clear that the planning application shows that the development will include a new public footpath around the corner which I feel is a very worthwhile improvement.

"So for anyone trying to negotiate the corner via what is currently a very uneven grass verge with hidden dips, drain covers and an old plinth, will soon have a properly made up footpath.

"There will also be a fence around the corner too."

The former Viking pub is being turned into a multi-purpose community venue.

Jessica Brown, who lives near the Tills Road site, said the issue has been ongoing since work began.

She said: "Personally I've nearly hit somebody going around there.

"The verge is covered in cars and vans, with contractors just sitting there, parked right up to the edge - making it a blind corner.

"It means there are mobility scooters or pushchair users either having to go into the road or slalom through the vehicles on the verge.

"But if you try and say something the workers clearly don't care.

"It's an accident waiting to happen."
