A city comedian has secured an accolade as the 'Judges' Favourite' at a national comedy competition.

Freddie Main, from Norwich, was recognised for his satirical drag character, MP Babs Romance, by the Dabbers Bingo Comedy Caller panel on Sunday.

Demonstrating originality and wit, Freddie's performance featured comical bingo calls on topical political references, all weaved into a medley of tailor-made songs.

As the two personas merged, Freddie, adorned in the guise of MP Babs Romance, stood before the sold-out crowd and entertained the audience with songs.

One memorable number involved an audience participant donning a face mask of the newly elected prime minister, Keir Starmer, as Babs serenaded an edited rendition of hit songwriter Taylor Swift's 'Karma is my boyfriend'.

Mr Main said: “The competition was so unhinged, in the best way, a totally bonkers baptism of fire for someone who had never played bingo before.

"It was so fun to see that bingo is not just for grannies but for parties and I loved watching the other acts so much, as well as developing my own act through the need to structure my jokes around bingo calls.”

Jonny Unknown, founder of Dabbers, said: "What a finale show - So much energy from the audience and four brilliant contestants competing.

"It was a tight contest, we all loved Babs, she may have been pipped at the post but we can't wait to invite her back to perform again.”

Freddie, who juggles various roles including as a workshop facilitator, comedian, director and producer, also has an Edinburgh Fringe Festival show under his belt from the previous year.

Along with the 'Judges' Favourite' title, his triumph wins him a year's supply of Malibu from the contest sponsors.
