A popular city centre bar which applied for an outdoor alcohol licence has been met with staunch backlash.

Tipsy Jar, in Redwell Street, has applied for a licence to sell alcohol to be drunk in the garden of the neighbouring St Michael at Plea Church as "an extension" of its current service.

Despite already holding a licence for the bar, the application has attracted strong criticism from some living nearby since being lodged with Norwich City Council.

Many have cited the adverse impact that "inevitable incidents" will have on those living nearby.

Larry Meek, who lives in Redwell Street, said: "A mix of residents, including children, want to use outdoor spaces for relaxation and their well-being.

"There will be drinkers, smokers and vapers facing them as well as the inevitable incidents of antisocial behaviour which will directly and psychologically disturb the enjoyment of living in those properties.

"The council has a direct responsibility to protect, preserve and enhance the living circumstances of its residents, not deteriorate."

Tomiko Shimomura added: "I will not feel as safe with drinkers next to my property.

"We have a nice quiet community but this may cause too much noise that will disturb residents here.

"We've already had a problem in the past with urinating and defecating in the alley, which we have to walk by to get to the entrance of our property."

Hannah Watfa is worried about how the "noise and disruption" will affect her mother-in-law and disabled father-in-law, who live in the area.

She said: "The thought of public nuisance being a daily occurrence, going well into the night, would not be acceptable and I'd be concerned this would greatly affect their quality of life.

"I'm terrified of the impact this would have on my family, on their mental health and day-to-day safety."

The business says that there will be a dedicated member of staff "always supervising the area" and "CCTV covering the area".

The application will be discussed by the city council on Monday.
