A city boozer has reopened after more than a year since closing its doors.

Customers at the Berstrete Gates pub in Norwich's Ber Street are again being served, with long-time owner Hang Pham stepping behind the bar.

"We wanted to reopen it because our daughter encouraged us to," said Hang.

"She works with people who are lonely and isolated and she told me to do it for them.

"We aren't doing it for the money, as we have a pension now. It is for anyone who is alone.

"I want to make people happy - it's what I live for."

She and her husband have owned the pub since 2002 and run it from afar while different landlords have seen to the day-to-day management.

The pub has been open since Saturday, June 1, but Hang is still working hard behind the scenes to transform the pub, which bailiffs cleared out in January.

Hang plans to run it for a year and then review whether to stay open.

A pub has been at the site since the early 1700s, as the Old Kings Arms until it was auctioned off in 1867.

It was known as The Kings Arms until 1937 when it changed to the Berstrete Gates.
